The Okavango Delta is in Northern Botswana. We were on leave at the end
of 1996, after a particularly difficult assignment in Azerbaijan. We
needed a rest; we had to feel the heat, warmth. We travelled for 3 months
in Southern Africa : Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South-Africa.
In Botswana,
the Okavanga river enters from the North, from Angola. The river arrives
in the arid Kalahari desert. The heat is so oppressive that all the
water evaporates : it’s an inland delta.
Shallow marshes and mud pools
are everywhere, and these attract the animals. The delta is a fantastic
area in order to experience magnificent landscapes, accompanied by
the sounds of the surrounding animals.
One travels in a Mokoro through the
delta, a small prawn cut from a single tree. It carries a maximum of
2 people, a guide and the luggage in order to camp independently.
Relaxing,
encounters, travelling – this is what “Okavango” means
for us. |
