The Laikipia region is located in between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares
mountain range. Characterised by at least 2 good rainy seasons a year,
this is the agricultural heart of Kenya. Huge farms covering thousands of
acres support – and are supported by – vast herds of cows, camels,
sheep and goats. As the farms are so huge, it is impossible to separate
them physically. The livestock is kept in naturally protected areas by guards.
But the farms not only support the livestock : thousands of elephants, buffalo’s
, giraffe, zebra, lions, hyena’s, leopards, cheetah all roam the plains.
The region is a nature park in its own right, co-existing with commercial
farming. It really is a garden of Eden. Every morning and evening, magnificent
vistas over the rolling hills, up to the snow caps of Mount Kenya, can be
enjoyed.
During our 4 years in Kenya, we’ve spend very many weekends
camping on a farm, where a farmer would happily allow us to put our tent
next to a river. Unforgettable encounters with animals, usually in very good
company of a few trusted friends, that’s what “Laikipia” means
to us. |
